Making A Discord Server 101

Updated: Apr 26, 2022

A brief guide on making a discord server by giraffe 🦒 AKA the CEO of Discord.

So let me start of by saying making a discord server isn't easy. For me, it's definitely one of the hardest things I have done. You may ask why I say that. Well here's why?

First and foremost, there are so many discord servers already. Estimates say there are approximately 6,7 million discord servers already. Because of the gigantic number of servers already; being different from other servers, getting people to join and importantly, getting people to be active participants on them is hard. However, ill give a brief guide on how I think you can make a server, below. So here goes:

Step 1. Planning

Planning is essential in just about anything. Whether you are planning on you're outfit for a party, planning on how you will ask your crush out or planning on what you're going to cook for breakfast. Anyways back to discord before I get hungry. The key step on planning your discord server is asking yourself this question, " Why am I making a server" ? If you have a solid answer to that question then you may proceed to next which is equally important, " What will my server be about" ? Now many people struggle with that question. Its important to know what your potential server will be about because that's the single reason that can make or break your server. Once you have an idea of what your server will be about, we shall proceed to step two.

Step 2. Creativity

Now here is arguably the harder step. Creativity. What is creativity? Creativity as per the definition in the dictionary is " the use of imagination or original ideas to create something unique"

Lets face it, everyone likes to standout. That goes for your server too. So, from the server name ( I'm so tried of seeing servers called e-girl something) , to its theme, to its channels, to the roles. All these should be different from other servers; do that and people will join and be active on your server. Step 3. Vision A very important but overlooked step. Vision is important. What I mean by vision is, " Where do you see your server 2-5 years from now" ? " How do you think it would have improved since it was first made" ? All these are important because they are the ones that will drive you to work hard. Having vision will also enable you to set realistic and achievable goals for the long term future. Step 4. Personality

Like I said in the FAQ section, being a server owner is hard. It comes with it benefits and draw backs. I have seen many servers in which the owner is an " absent owner" , by that I mean the owner does not even put effort into chatting in the server. If your are indeed active in your server, one mistake you must not make is making the server all about yourself. Yes! You heard me right. I know the server is yours, however, it should feel like its an environment for all who are in the server and not just you. This is commonly done by users having an " owner" role hoisted high for all to see, putting the word " owner" in the server username and constantly reminding members that you are the owner. Yes, your are the owner, however, if you really want your server to succeed, you must see yourself as a member first. Additionally if you truly want your server to be successful here are some key character traits you will need:

  • Be kind. As a server owner, more often than not, your server is a reflection of you. So if you are kind, welcoming, helpful; that will be inculcated and embedded unto your server members as well

  • Calm. As a server owner, I have witnessed a lot of drama. Now in these situations, you need to be calm and collected in all situations and try to diffuse the situation in a rational manner.

  • Know your members The way to get to know your members is by chatting with them and treating them equally. That way your members will feel a sense of belonging just because you are active in the server.

Step 5. Bots

Last but not least, bots. No discord server is complete without bots. These virtual machines have been integrated in our everyday discord lives that they complete servers. I would give you a cool list of bots that I would suggest you add to your server, however with bots, its important you add bots that are inline with your server theme. Hopefully these tips help! ^_^
